Golden alexanders are a favorite for early pollinators and a host plant for several swallowtail butterflies. It tolerates a variety of soils, does well in sun or part shade but likes it a bit moist. Has evergreen foliage. Direct sow in fall or cold stratify for 2-3 months and then direct sow. Does best in cool soil. May not flower in first season. Zizia will freely self-sow but you can cut back the seed heads in summer to control the spread. There may be a few blooms in winter.
