A deciduous native clump-forming small shrub or small tree with an irregularly rounded crown noted for its beautiful showy 4-10” long reddish orange panicles of tubular flowers in the spring that attract hummingbirds. Dark green shiny palmate leaves. Produces smooth large brown capsules that encase 1-3 shiny dark brown seeds called buckeyes that ripen in the fall. The seeds are poisonous and are avoided by wildlife. Dry the fruit until the capsules split for 1-2 days at room temperature. Plant outside in the fall 1 – 2” deep as seeds need 3-4 months of cold weather or stratify at 41 degrees (your refrigerator) for 120 days. Expect 50% germination rate.
