Mexican tarragon is a shrubby perennial native to Central and South America.  In Virginia (zones colder than zone 8) it is considered an annual, blooming in August and September with small yellow half-inch flowers. It cannot grow in full shade, but can tolerate a variety of soils, including clay if planted in full sun. Mexican tarragon can be used in an herb garden, as a companion plant to tomatoes, or along a walkway.  Some people develop a rash from the sap or thorns on the plant.  Be sure to wash the affected area with soap and water soon after contact.

Sow indoors in March (6 to 8 weeks before last frost) or direct sow 2 weeks after frost. Takes about 2 weeks to germinate.
