Helenium is commonly known as "sneezeweed" because its dried leaves were used to make snuff to treat colds and congestion. Prefers full sun, but can tolerate afternoon shade. It is a late season bloomer, that serves as a food plant for caterpillars.

Sow indoors 8-10 weeks before planting out in early spring when the soil is cool and light frost is still possible. Or direct sow in early spring or early autumn. Cover only lightly, since they need light to germinate.
