Herbaceous perennial, native to the southeastern United States. Plant in full sun to partial shade. Mostly moist, occasionally wet soils. Propagation through seed or stem cutting. Tolerates pruning, but flowers (deep red) appear on new growth. Has palmately compound, deep green leaves (5-6" wide). From seed, plant will flower in second season from mid-summer until cold weather. Susceptible to damage from deer. Flowers attract hummingbirds, pollinators, and butterflies and are a wildlife food source. Taller plants may be staking.
