Ironweed is a tall, native perennial wildflower in the aster family. It is mostly found in moist thickets along streambanks. Naturalizes easily, and can be pruned back in the spring if a shorter flower is desired. New York Ironweed is of special value to native bees, which nest in dead, hollow stems. Showy, purple flowers emerge in late summer.
Sow seeds outdoors in the fall, or indoors after two months of cold, moist stratification.
